0711|CYCLING showed a good team performance in the 70th edition of the Trofeo Matteotti (UCI 1.2), riding at the front of the peloton for most of the race to protect Nicola Toffali. The Italian showed his class in the final sprint and took a sixth place.
The 188.5 km race consisted of thirteen laps of a 14.5 km circuit in and around Pescara. It was a continuous up-and-down with two shorter hills, one longer ascent and only a short flat section near the finish. A break of four went away early, and then the race was controlled by Professional Continental Teams Nippo – Vini Fantini and Wilier Triestina – Selle Italia who led the peloton with one-two riders each. The 0711|CYCLING riders were right behind, keeping Nicola Toffali near the front.
Despite a high pace on the last laps the race came down to a mass sprint, and Nicola Toffali was close to the win: “I positioned myself well and started my sprint. With 100 metres to go I was in front, but I was passed by some riders in the end and ‘only’ finished sixth. That was a pity, but on the other hand I am proud of the team. We were at the front of the race for hours, that was worthy of a pro team.”
For Jan Hugger, it was his first elite race in Italy: “The start wasn’t as fast as I thought once the break was away”, the 19-year old said. “Then we kept Nicola fresh for the sprint. I had to let go of the first group on the final lap, but together with Sibiu this race will give me another boost, especially with regard to the Tour Alsace with the U23 national team at the end of the month.”
“Like in Sibiu, the guys showed good teamwork”, General Manager Julian Rammler said. “The climbs weren’t very steep, so our strategy was ‘all for Nicola’. And the team put that into action very well, Henrik Hamm and Yannick Mayer did a great job. Max Wörner is in good shape, but needs some race days after his break. Jan gets better with every race, and we mustn’t forget that he’s only 19 years old.”
